How Guayabera is born

The Guayabera shirt is a traditional male garment known in Central America and the Caribbean, with historical testimony pointing to Cuba as its homeland. This comes from an eighteenth-century narration of a couple of Sancti Spíritus in Cuba, the story tells how the husband asked his wife to make a shirt with many pockets to transport the Guayaba fruits to hydrate while working in the cultivated fields . The name Guayabera derives its origin from the Guayaba fruit. The Cuban design is demonstrated by the four pockets, as well as the fabric panels with pleated seams known as alforzas, reminiscent of the columns of the colonial architecture and that extend vertically along the front and back of the shirt.
